"But what we have said is that if members accept this deal. Ms Bousted added that a union would "never rule out strike action in future". "We will continue to campaign for teachers to gradually restore their pay to the levels it was in 2010," she said. She stressed that this is a "significant move", despite still being below inflation. Ms Bousted went on to detail how eight days of strike action have "moved the government from 3.5% to 6.5%". "We will say to the members very clearly that this is an offer that we think they should bank," she said.
The NEU is recommending that its members accept the pay rise.
"There's an extra 3% that the government will fund from underspends," Ms Bousted said. She went on to say that the "vast majority" of schools will find the pay award affordable, because they had budgeted for 3%. spending on special educational needs and that it won't come from post 16 funding" or nurseries.
Pressed on how this will be funded in reality, Ms Bousted said unions have "received guarantees that the funding will not come from the schools building programme. Ms Bousted said this means "front line services in schools will not be affected". She said the 6.5% pay rise for teachers and school leaders is the "biggest pay award that the independent review body has ever made, and importantly we have secured guarantees on how it will be funded". It comes after teachers unions released a joint statement with the prime minister and education secretary confirming that recommended pay rises will "allow teachers and school leaders to call off strike action". Mary Bousted, joint general secretary of the National Education Union, said she has been assured that "front line" school services will not be affected by a 6.5% pay rise.
